Mitchell Starc took 6 for 72 at Newlands as South Africa collapsed from 158 for 0 to 330 all out. His figures are the best by an Australian bowler in a Test at the ground, passing Shane Warne's 6 for 161 from 2002. Four wickets fell in his last six deliveries.

Starc's Spell in Numbers

South Africa were 325 for 6 when Starc returned with the new ball. Within three overs they lost their last four wickets for five runs.

It was Starc's 20th five-wicket haul in Test cricket. He took two wickets in an over on three separate occasions during the day.

The Final Six Balls

The closing sequence read W, 1LB, W, W, 0, W. Gerald Coetzee was bowled first ball by an inswinger that deflected off the pad into leg stump.

Kagiso Rabada then went lbw for a two-ball duck. Both dismissals came after the more significant wicket of Marco Jansen.

Breaking Warne's 24-Year Mark

Shane Warne's 6 for 161 in 2002 had been the best return by an Australian at Newlands for 24 years. Starc's 6 for 72 is 89 runs cheaper for the same number of wickets.

The two spells were built differently. Warne's came across an innings of long toil, while Starc's arrived in a burst at the end of a long day.

The Wicket of Marco Jansen

Jansen had made 52 and shared a 95-run stand with Ryan Rickelton. Starc then landed a full inswinger just outside off stump that went through the gap between bat and pad.

The delivery drew comparisons with the ball that bowled Brendon McCullum in the 2015 World Cup final.

How South Africa Lost Ten Wickets After 158/0

Aiden Markram and Marques Ackerman shared 158 for the first wicket after Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to field. Ackerman was stumped for 95 charging Nathan Lyon, and Markram pulled Josh Hazlewood to long leg for 78.

Cummins and the Toss

Australia's surface gave little help for two sessions. Cummins went wicketless across 18 overs, and the decision to field was debated through the afternoon.

Starc's closing burst largely settled that debate, at least for the first day.

Starc on a Series That Has Not Felt Right

Starc had found almost no swing in the first two Tests and did not claim the problem was solved. "A lot of things haven't felt right through the series," he said at stumps.

He added that the experience in the attack helped the group work through it. "We have been around long enough to problem solve as we go."

Ian Bishop called Starc "a machine, especially with a new ball" and noted the 20 five-wicket hauls.

What 330 Means in a Series Decider

South Africa may still regard 330 as a competitive first-innings total in a series decider. They won in Gqeberha from a considerably weaker position.

Even so, a side that had 158 on the board without losing a wicket ended up losing all ten for 172 runs. That collapse is the central statistical story of the opening day.
