India will be without Ishan Kishan for the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The BCCI confirmed a low grade right adductor strain sustained in the series opener. India lead the five-match series 1-0, and the batting order now needs a data-driven rethink.
BCCI Confirms Kishan's Absence
The BCCI statement said Kishan is ruled out of the second T20I because of a low grade right adductor strain. The medical team is monitoring his progress. Earlier, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had said it was unlikely he would play on Saturday.
Kotak also addressed speculation about the batting order in the first match. Kishan's groin strain was linked to the order change, which saw him bat at No. 5 instead of his usual No. 3 position.
Kishan and Tilak in the First T20I
Neither batter in the reshuffled middle order made a major impact. Kishan was dismissed by New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner after scoring 1 run from 3 balls. Tilak Varma, who moved up to No. 3, made 6 runs from 11 balls.

How India Won the Opener
India chased a target of 226 and won by four wickets with two balls left. That equates to a required rate of 11.30 runs per over across 20 overs. The chase was completed in 19.4 overs.
Samson's 67 anchored the pursuit, while Dhir's unbeaten 42 as a finisher closed it out. The contributions came from the top and the lower middle order, which offset the low returns from Kishan and Tilak.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the Likely Replacement
Kotak said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is "one of the strongest contenders" if Kishan does not recover. Reports also quote him saying that Sooryavanshi comes into the calculations. The 15-year-old was not part of India's plans for the first T20I.
India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer had said the teenager had to wait because of the consistency of the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Samson. With Kishan unavailable, the combination can be reworked.
Sooryavanshi's Numbers So Far
Sooryavanshi has played eight T20Is for India. He has scored 246 runs at a strike rate of 186.36, including two half-centuries. In the IPL, he has accumulated 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, career T20 snapshot| Competition | Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | Fifties |
|---|
| T20Is for India | 8 | 246 | 186.36 | 2 |
| IPL (Rajasthan Royals) | - | 776 | - | - |
Possible Batting Order Adjustments
One option is for Sooryavanshi to open alongside Abhishek Sharma, with Samson moving to No. 3. That mirrors the approach India used during the Asian Games. It would place a high strike rate batter at the top and use Samson's flexibility in the middle.
The trade-off is role clarity. A strike rate of 186.36 over eight innings is a limited sample, and the teenager needs a defined role rather than outsized expectations at international level.
What to Watch in the Second T20I
Three indicators will frame the assessment: powerplay scoring rate, Samson's returns at No. 3, and how the middle order handles Santner's spin. The result will also show whether India's depth held up without Kishan.
The medical team will continue to monitor Kishan's progress. His availability for the rest of the series will depend on that assessment.
