India have won two of 10 ODI series in New Zealand, in 2008/09 and 2018/19, and begin their 11th on November 4 at Eden Park, Auckland. This analysis covers the overall head-to-head, home and away splits, and every series outcome that frames the opening match.
IND vs NZ ODI Overall Head-to-Head
India lead the fixture 63-52 from 123 completed and abandoned matches. One game ended in a tie, at Auckland in January 2014, and seven finished without a result.
New Zealand hold the edge at neutral venues, including the 2000 ICC KnockOut final in Nairobi and group meetings at the 1975, 1979 and 1999 World Cups.
| Category | Matches | India Wins | NZ Wins | Tie | No Result |
|---|
| Overall | 123 | 63 | 52 | 1 | 7 |
| In India | 43 | 32 | 10 | 0 | 1 |
| In New Zealand | 45 | 14 | 26 | 1 | 4 |
Subtracting the home and away totals leaves 35 matches at neutral venues. India won 17 of those, New Zealand 16, and two had no result.
India in New Zealand: A Lopsided Split
New Zealand has been the harder assignment. India have toured for 10 ODI series there since 1975/76, winning two, drawing two and losing six.
Match Record on New Zealand Soil
New Zealand have won 26 of 45 ODIs at home against India's 14. That is a win rate of roughly 58 per cent for the hosts, against about 31 per cent for India.
India have never won more than four matches in a single series there. Their biggest win in New Zealand is by 90 runs at Mount Maunganui on January 26, 2019.
New Zealand's heaviest home win over India came by 108 runs at Dunedin in March 1990.
The Two Series Wins
India's first ODI series win in New Zealand came in 2008/09 by 3-1, 33 years after their first tour. The second arrived 10 years later, by 4-1 in 2018/19.
In 2019, India won the first three matches at Napier and Mount Maunganui. They lost the fourth in Hamilton by eight wickets and won the fifth in Wellington by 35 runs.
India's Dominance at Home
In India, the sides have met 43 times. India have won 32 and New Zealand 10, a win rate above 74 per cent. One match, in Chennai in October 2003, was abandoned.
India's biggest win in the fixture came at home, by 190 runs in Visakhapatnam on October 29, 2016. They also swept New Zealand 5-0 in 2010/11, winning in Guwahati, Jaipur, Vadodara, Bengaluru and Chennai.
New Zealand's 10 wins in India are thinly spread. They had never won enough matches in one visit to take a series until 2025/26. They won in Rajkot by seven wickets and Indore by 41 runs after losing the opener in Vadodara, taking the series 2-1.
Bilateral ODI Series Record
The two teams have played 18 bilateral ODI series. India have won nine, New Zealand seven, and two were drawn.

|---|
| Overall | 18 | 9 | 7 | 2 |

| In New Zealand | 10 | 2 | 6 | 2 |
Drawn Series and Recent Results
India came from behind to level 2-2 in 1993/94 and again in 1998/99. In the second of those, a washout in Wellington left the five-match series tied.
India have not won an ODI in New Zealand since the 2019 tour. They lost all three matches in 2019/20, then lost in Auckland in November 2022 before rain washed out the remaining two games in Hamilton and Christchurch.

| 2008/09 | India won 3-1 |
| 2018/19 | India won 4-1 |
| 2019/20 | New Zealand won 3-0 |

What the Numbers Indicate
The answer is yes, twice in 10 attempts, and not since Virat Kohli's side won there in early 2019. The current series will be India's 11th ODI tour of New Zealand and their sixth five-match series in the country.
New Zealand's recent form adds context. They won 2-1 in India in January, their first ODI series victory on Indian soil, while India won the Champions Trophy semi-final in Dubai in March 2025.
The venue split suggests the hosts start with a clear statistical advantage. India's record at home is 7-1 in series, while in New Zealand they trail 6-2 with two draws.
